Christine Broom
Christine Mary Audrey Broom nee Whetter
Born in Sandown, as a child Christine dreamed of being a farmer.
Whilst at the grammar school she worked at the local dairy and later went on to work with chickens at Broadfields Farm.
During the winter of ’62-’63 Christine was named ‘Heroine of the Storm’ after walking for eight hours to the farm in the horrendous snow to milk the cows, leaving at 4am and returning at mdidnight, every day for six weeks!
Christine was a Herdswoman on a farm in Roud, a Milk Recorder for the Milk Marketing Board in East Wight and later lived and worked with her family at Lower Rill Farm at Chillerton.
