Sam Biles on Slaughterhouse
Yes, as well as the Knacker’s Yard they … my grandfather had a Slaughter House for human consumption, meat, that was in Scarrots Lane, in Newport where there were a lot of Slaughterhouses, and I think it closed in about 1962 – 64 but these photographs are of animals that have been killed and dressed in that Slaughterhouse in Scarrots Lane.
My grandfather Harold there and then my father David there, and it’s always interesting when you look at these photographs is the actual size of the animals because they are huge and that’s because animals in those days were kept much longer, much older by the time that they went to meat.
So these would have been five or six years old whereas most beef animals really these days are killed sort of before they are two, two and a half, that sort of age.
