They kept pigs at Park Green Farm that were big old black pigs, not very fashionable these days because people don’t like the black hair on the crackling and this is at Newport Station so these pigs were fattened up on the swill from the Hospital and the Prison and then they were sent over to be killed after going on the train over to Southampton and the very fat meat that they produced was used to feed the stevedores that would load and unload the ships and they could cope with that very high fat content because they were working off so many calories and energy.
