Paul Whitelock on Milk
Well those cows, unlike Di, we were recording the cows and feeding them according to their milk production, trying to get as much out of them as we could because in those days we were paid for producing butter fat and solids not fat and so we wanted the rich creamy milk and we wanted as much of it as we could get and so as I said, we were feeding them quite heavily, but good quality food and concentrates. I mean an Ayrshire could give four gallons a day and maybe a bit more, just depending on which stage of her lactation she was in, but they were good cows.
