John Attrill on Newport Market
Yes, well we used to … we had about 25 sows so in theory you had a family or strain of pigs born each week ‘cos the sow will have two families in a year so you would have some to sell each week.
We used to sell them as … they were called shoats, you know, pigs about 10 weeks old and we used to send them to Newport Market.
Newport Market was an essential … every Tuesday, every self-respecting farmer would go to Newport, go in the Market and have a look round, talk to the Merchants, go to the Bank and draw money for the wages and it was, you know, almost a set thing, certainly in my family that Tuesday was Market day but it gradually fizzled out (laughs).
